Canada’s west coast is hit with solid precipitation from its neighbouring Pacific Ocean. This moisture follows a steep route to British Columbia’s mountain peaks and dowses the region with light, fluffy powder. Alberta, next door to coastal BC, gets a similar dumping across its impressive, tall and seemingly endless Rocky Mountains. That fresh white stuff is in abundance in these parts and has cemented Canada as a world-class backcountry destination since the dawn of ski touring.
A “poor season” in Canada is a scarce occurrence, and often still dominates the typical winter in most ski destinations. Consistent conditions are exactly what skiing in Canada is all about and exactly what visitors want to see. Ski touring, with all its efforts required in getting to the mountain peak on foot, demands favourable conditions and a healthy downpour of snow (some bluebird days won’t go astray either!) for it to be truly desirable. So, for those considering their first (or second or third…) ski touring trip to Canada, you can rest assured that Mother Nature will paint you a very white landscape on your visit.
Anyone who appreciates the warmth and friendliness of a foreign country’s locals will adore Canada. The country has an esteemed kindness that makes the region so easy to return to. The culture – somewhat oddly put – is like a loving hug from your grandma, and has a warmth to it which needs to be felt to be understood. Smile at strangers, laugh with new friends and join the masses that feel right at home on a visit to Canada.
