Be Aware

Freeriding does come with some pitfalls. Well… falls, to be exact. Usually, catching an edge, misjudging a landing or sliding off a rail means just dusting yourself off and getting on with it. But sometimes the unfortunate happens and an injury ensues. If you’re unlucky enough to have an accident, make sure you’re properly covered. Five Reasons to Freeride in Japan

01

Japan's world-class powder

How does this place get so much snow? Well, you can thank the weather systems flowing from Japan’s mainland and nearby islands. These act as a funnel for cool winds and moisture, which bring a good dusting of the white stuff to its much more elevated neighbouring mountains. Ski towns get about 300 to 600 inches of snow each year, but it dumps even more upon the hills. The snow quality is unreal too. It can sometimes be heavy out here but most snowfall produces light and fluffy powder. So, expect some serious powder riding when you’re here.

02

Incredible mountains in Japan

So many great backcountry summits to explore, so little time. Let’s get right to it. Mt. Tiene in the famous Hokkaido Prefecture is a brilliant place to start for big backcountry. It’s a shredder’s dream as it comes with a lot of snow (4 meters each year to be precise). Freeriders will love exploring the rest of Hokkaido with some incredible untapped backcountry terrain on offer, near resorts you’ve never heard of, in towns you can’t pronounce. Honshu is another impeccable option for freeride fans. And Myoko is fresh out of a winter’s dream with the untamed region perfect for powder hounds. Get in touch with us to find your ideal mountain destination in Japan.

03

The most appealing freerider terrain

The terrain is fun out here in Japan. Real fun. Such incredible riding landscape deserves a traditional bow, as it ticks so many boxes. It’s steep, it’s deep and it shows off a range of natural features for freeriders to get creative on. Your tour guides will send you in the right direction if you want cliff drops and huge verticals (of which there are plenty), and same goes for chutes, glacier bowls, and just big wide open spaces. The terrain is fun but best of all it’s diverse enough to whet any freerider’s appetite.

04

Japan doesn't have to be expensive

Japan isn’t a bank account killer. It’s affordable compared to many other global options. Accommodation on your freestyle trip can sometimes be tailored to your budget, depending on your operator choice. Some offer hostel-style lodgings, which will keep an extra Yen or two in your pocket. As Japan has grown so much in popularity over the years, more budget airlines are taking the trip over from Europe and other major areas of the globe. So if you’re on a budget, you could still be on for Japan.

05

Unique japanese culture

If you’ve been to Japan, you’ll know there’s something infectious about it’s beautiful and timeless culture. Japan infuses the new with the old, with incomparable traditional cuisine the perfect precursor to a night of bar hopping or nightclubbing.
