Be Aware

Austria is famous for its epic backcountry. It’s the reason the world’s best flock to this part of Europe to freeride. But the pros have one thing that many first-timers don’t: Experience. So before heading into the Austrian Alps’ challenging - but incredible - off-piste, make sure you’ve booked with the best guides and most experienced backcountry operators in the region. Safety is the number one priority when heading out of bounds (yep, safety before fun!) so ensure you’re comfortable you’ve selected a premium operator to lead you backcountry.

Contact LUEX today to get the rundown on the best Austrian operators for a safe (and epic!) freeride adventure.

Four Reasons Austria is an Unforgettable Winter Destination

01

Discover the Austrian Alps

Austria is one of the most popular ski regions in the world, and for good reason. The Austrian Alps make up 28.7% of the Alps’ total area and have some of the highest points in the mountain ranges. These peaks are yours to ride, explore and hunt champagne powder.

Innsbruck is one of the most popular resorts in Austria’s Alps, its title as winter sports capital a well-earned one. Six different areas comprise this beautiful region and is the pinnacle of skiing and riding in the Austrian Alps. Not far from Austria’s center point of winter sports in Innsbruck, is Kitzbuhel. Famous for its annual Hahnenkamm ski race, where skiers bolt down long, steep slopes like trains on snow, Kitzbuhel is a carver’s paradise and a guaranteed epic visit.

Skiers and snowboarders can venture beyond the boundaries to the Austrian Alps’ incredible backcountry. It’s raw, majestic and jaw-dropping summits are targets for the world’s best riders. But with the right guide and operator, any intermediate skier and snowboarder can claim their time on Austria’s incredible region of the Alps.

02

Champagne powder and varied terrain in Austria

Austria has a long, 200-day ski season. This window lets in plenty of soft, fluffy snow, with snowstorms early in the season replaced by bluebird days and sun to soften powder and brighten faces. The champagne powder here is abundant, nowhere more so than in Austria’s backcountry.

Beyond the boundaries, skiers and boarders will find rugged, open terrain with a tonne of features. The Alps in Austria are steep. Freeriders will be dropping off epic cliffs and threading tight chutes, with comfort that any mishap will be cushioned by deep snow.

A heliski trip is the best way to experience Austria’s incredible and varied terrain. Helis will maximise your time in the backcountry and put you in the region’s best spot for that day’s conditions. Get in touch with LUEX to discover our options for guided tours and heliski trips in Austria.

03

An apres like no other for a perfect ski holiday

Europe is home to after-ski parties. But Austria’s apres is hard to beat. The ski towns of Innsbruck, Kitzbuhel, Mayrhofen and beyond are magnets for party-goers. Pub crawls and drinking games are standard practice for those in ski and snowboard boots. When the lifts shut down, the Austrian party vibe is like an untameable flame.

But, after saying all this… if your apres looks more like a glass of wine, a cheese platter and a couch to sink into by a roaring fire, don’t despair. There’ll be a spot for you in a quiet, cosy Austrian bar.

04

Charming austrian locals

Prost! A trip to Austria means meeting the locals because none come friendlier than the Austrians. You’ll be charmed by the regulars of these mountains, with a welcoming spirit to make you feel right at home, even if you’re thousands of miles from it. With so many customs and traditions in these parts - especially when apres kicks off - you’ll have enough help from Austria’s warm-hearted locals showing you how things are done. Whether it’s where to try the best local cuisine, learn some local lingo or experience a rite of passage through a few drinking games, the people of charming Austria will be your unofficial guides throughout your stay.
