Eight kilometers of perfect coastline make up what is considered by the American organisation Save the Waves Coalition as the first surfing reserve in Europe and the second in the world. It’s more than a surfer’s paradise, it is a pinned point in the consciousness of the world’s surfing community, where beaches such as Ribeira de Ilhas, the Baía dos Dois Irmãos (known locally as Coxos), Empa beach in front of the village, and São Lourenço beach are spoken with heavenly appreciation world over.

When you decide to return from the ocean to explore the land which the ocean so dearly hugs, you can find many incredible places nearby to visit. Spend time at The Aldeia Típica de José Franco, a miniature village in clay in the town of Sobreiro, and the Convent of Mafra (the inspiration for Nobel Prize winner for Literature, José Saramago). It’s located in the National Tapada of Mafra, built by King D. João V after the construction of the convent in the 18th century and is nowadays a relaxing place in which you can see fallow deer, wild boar and other species of wildlife living in the wild.
